Witches: The Five Best Witch Movies To Watch
77This hub is simply a collection of my top five favorite witch movies. I do realize that they tend to demonstrate the stereotypes that I do not like to condone as I am active in an effort to break biases and wrong judgements in modern times; however, this list is specifically for fun and entertainment so please do not take offense or find it wrong.
If you want to know the best witch movies every made, take a look below...and enjoy! A few of these are even family-friendly and great to watch during Halloween.
5. Practical Magic
Ahhh...the beautiful Nicole Kidman and the understated Sandra Bullock...together in one movie? As witch sisters with special powers? Yes, please! The movie starts out on a high note and kind of takes you through a tragedy in one of the sister's lives. The sister needs help to cope with her traumatic experience, and the other sister moves in to aid her with her family and new life. You could say that there is one more stable, family-oriented sister and the other sister is more of a free bird...who tends to get into trouble along the way. In the end, the two sisters help each other deal with life's catastrophes and use a little bit of that good ol' fashioned magic!
4. Hocus Pocus
Disney's Hocus Pocus is a very family-friendly movie despite what the name and cover may demonstrate. Bette Midler plays the lead role, as Winifred Sanderson...a three hundred year old witch who comes back from the dead...bringing her two sister slaves back with her. Kathy Najimy plays the somewhat oblivious drone-like sister that caters to Bette Midler's character's every wicked whim. Sarah Jessica Parker plays the blonde-ditsy and super cute third sister. Her character also tends to be pretty whacky and will make you laugh quite a bit in this flick. The basis of the story is that the Sanderson sisters return from the grave to steal souls of children in a little town in New England thereby giving them the power to live and wreak havoc on the world forever. The settings in this movie are nothing short of eye-appealling and the wit and talent of Bette Midler will keep you totally bewitched!
3. Mists of Avalon
The Mists of Avalon is not your average modern day movie with everyday stereotypes of witches. This movie is actually based off of a wonderfully written and magical book by Marion Zimmer Bradley. I highly recommend reading the book before watching the movie, but at least watch this movie if you cannot read the book first. The Mists of Avalon takes you on a mystical journey to the past, to the time of King Arthur and his strong golden city of Camelot. It actually gives you a background to King Arthur's birth and early life, as well as his mother and her people. King Arthur's mother is beckoned by the Lady of the Lake (played by the talented Anjelica Houston) to join her coven on the magical island of Avalon and use her magical powers to celebrate and worship the Goddess. The story is absolutely beautiful and the settings are breathtaking. You do not want to pass this movie up!
2. Witches of Eastwick
The Witches of Eastwick is one of my all-time favorite movies in general. It is an eighties' classic and it stars Jack Nicholson, Cher, Goldie Hawn and Susan Sarandon. Jack Nicholson's character is named Darryll and the movie clues you into the fact that he is the devil in disguise. Darryll spontaneously moves into a lonely, boring little town specifically with a mission to seduce three particular women with special abilities that they do not realize they have. His ultimate plan is revealed and the ladies have to fend for themselves against this "devil" in disguise. There are twists in this movie that you will not realize are coming and you will be surprised with the devilish ending. This movie is the eighties in all its witchy glory!
1. The Craft
My number one pick for best witch movie of all time is The Craft. This flick was filmed and produced in the nineties and is not necessarily kid or family-friendly. I would say this is more of a movie for older teenagers and adults. The main stars of this movie kind of represent the old tale of good versus evil...with some crafty twists along the way. Fairuza Balk plays...you guessed it...the evil witch! Somehow though, she is still GORGEOUS. Those clear blue eyes, those red lips...and yet her looks project a sort of "sold-her-soul" vibe...you've got to love it! Does good prevail in the end after four girls dabble with the supernatural? You will have to watch and find out for yourself.

Love it! I actually own the DVD, Its my favorite version of the story of the nights of the round table and the acting is incredible! Such a great cast!!

hey, mythbuster! thanks for stopping by, and oh, yes! you must watch mists of avalon. especially if you like the king arthur and knights of the round table tales, you will like this movie. it gives the story from a woman's perspective and sort of gives you a historical-fictional view of the english pagans and how they worshipped before christianity. pretty cool! :)
I especially like The Craft, and own it out of pure luck.
Until I read your hub I had completely forgotten about Practical Magic, I think that I will have to watch it again sometime.

Nice Hub! I like all things witchy. Of your list, have only seen Hocus Pocus, which is hilarious! I'll look into the others. I will probably get a thump on the head, but I am an uber-fan of the "Charmed" series of the late 90s and early 2000s. You get comedy, drama, good vs evil, although good has to go through hell, literally, to win. I have the whole series on DVD. I'll post back once I've seen some of the others on your recommended list. Thanks for the info!

Awesome list. This was a brilliant idea to put together. I think I've seen all those except for The Mists of Avalon. Would you believe this particular alien is a very big fan of witches? Actually, you know witches and aliens can have a couple of things in common, like flying and... if you believe Halloween costumes even green skin!
The Craft is such a classic. I could watch that many many times over.

It's not your normal witch movie per se, but it is very good and gives us a look into the past when Arthur was King of England and Pagans were being converted to Christian...very good movie! And yes, The Craft is a classic...I don't think I'll ever stop loving that movie.
There was one called "Teen Witch" starring Robyn Lively back in the early 90s that was kind of interesting. Or maybe it was just because I had a crush on her.

Practical Magic and Hocus Pocus are two of our family favorites--we break them out this time year and watch them over and over. I've never seen The Craft, so we'll have to make a point to find it.
