Personal Hauntings, Chapter 5: The Sleep Paralysis Evil Spirit

My Recent Experience with "Sleep Paralysis"

I wake up out of a string of strange, blurry dreams. My house is quiet, not a peep out of anyone. My daughter is asleep between my husband and I in our comfy, warm bed. Suddenly, I hear something coming from the foot of the bed...sort of a light scratching, as if my cat is scratching the wall across from the foot of the bed...

The blankets begin to roll back and away from my body and my daughter is pulled into the air by an unseen force...I stare in terror and utter anguish as her body is shaken violently in thin air, over and over again. My husband wakes up and tries to grab her and pull her from the unseen thing's clutches, but it's no use. I know I can save her, but I cannot move. My body is totally frozen, I can't even scream or cry out for god to help us.

Then...I can see it...the unseen image begins to slowly materialize. It is an ugly, frighteningly evil spirit that seems to be floating or perched on the air in my bedroom. His grip is tightening around my daughter's helpless body as she screams. My mind is racing, my heart is screaming out for her and to unfreeze my body...it's no use.

Then...I really wake up. I'm sweating and my heart is thumping so hard it's liable to beat right out of my chest. I'm shaking and gasping for air. I can't believe that just happened to me...again. This is the second time I've experienced what doctors' call "sleep paralysis". Usually I am more than able to handle scary dreams or nightmares with ease, but this sleep paralysis thing...well, it's more than my mind or conscience can bear.

I look around my room, remembering that my daughter wasn't sleeping with us that night...nor would something like that really happen in reality. At least not in my belief. However, I felt as though this bout of sleep paralysis was more than just a random physiological or psychological off-wiring in my mind. It felt as if something negative or "evil" was trying to frighten me...or get something out of me...like my energy or strength.

The image of this sleep paralysis evil spirit haunted me all that day. I think the thought of being powerless while my daughter was being harmed was what scared me the most. And it was like this negative spirit or energy knew that this is my greatest fear. Whether this sleep paralysis was explainable by science or not, I decided to do a cleansing ritual in my home.

The next morning before going to work, I performed a quick, impromptu smudging ritual throughout my entire house. The ritual included simply burning a bundle of white sage, circling the smoke throughout each room of my home, and saying a prayer of cleansing and protection in each room of my house.

When I returned home from work that evening, my house felt different...in a positive and warm way. My home had taken on an air of total peace, serenity, and utter safety...as if it had literally been "cleansed" from the negativity that I had been feeling. Since then, I have had no more visits from the sleep paralysis evil spirit...nor do I fear it.

To sum it up, I do not know whether sleep paralysis is truly a psychological or physiological issue. I would like to believe that, but the experiences I've personally had with what doctors call "sleep paralysis" seem much more spiritual to me than what science would like to admit. If you have had a similar experience with sleep paralysis or what you feel is actually an evil or negative entity, please share it with us.

Can you share your cleansing ritual prayers Kitty. People like me may just need to say them to ritually clean our homes from such spirits. Great post! I voted up and interesting.=)

Admiral_Joraxx - I simply circled the smoke from the sage in a clockwise motion three times in each corner of each room and said three times:

"In the name of the god and the goddess, I cleanse this room from all negativity and impurifications."

That was it! :) Good luck and Blessings.

I have had this happen to me. It would happen all the time but the last time it happened was about 5 yrs ago. I never saw anything but I definitely felt a presence and a bad feeling that went along with it. As I write this I can remember that feeling. Anyway I would be paralyzed and unable to wake up. I'd keep telling myself to wake up but I couldn't. Once I thought I did and my body was heavy as I crawled to my bedroom door. It took all my might to move then I'd turn around and see my body lying in the bed. It was horrifying. I read up a lot on it, so when it happened again, I told myself I couldn't be harmed and to relax. I went back to sleep. It hasn't happened to me since. When it was happening, I never knew it happened to other people. I was afraid to tell anyone. Thought I was going crazy.

What a terrifying dream! I have similar type dreams where It seems like my mind is awake yet my body is asleep-though I can still see around my dark room. I'm just grateful I haven't seen the terrifying visions that some report. I can see how it would feel like spiritual warfare and who is to say it isn't. Scientists think they can account for everything but I disagree. Thank you for sharing this. I hope these occurances do not happen often for you.

It has happened to me 2 or 3 times. my eyes were wide open yet i could not breath or move, even though i tried as hard as i could... once i said a prayer in my heart and was released ... the other times i just ignored it and went back to sleep again. never happened again after i ignored it though.

thanks for sharing this kitty.

Hello Kitty,

My son has been very psychic and having visions since he was in his early 20's, the same age it began with me. He experiences this sleep paralysis. But he can "go into the dream" as he says, and change the outcome. I have a metaphysics teacher who can also do this. So far I have never been able to get into my own dream to change it's outcome, but I'm glad he can, as he's been scared by the paralysis thing. He's a double Scorpio, so I knew it was just a matter of time before the psychic stuff began. It's either before age 7, or at a similar age as a family member who has experienced the same.

arksys - Unfortunately I can't ignore my sleep paralysis. I wish I could! Glad you're able to get away from it though. It's truly a frightening experience.

Jean Bakula - I wouldn't call myself psychic, but I think it's possible that I am. I've had lucid dreams (conscious dreams) since I was a very little girl and have seen, heard, and felt spirits my entire life. Usually I can understand and not be too scared in my nightmares, but sleep paralysis is a whole other beast...it's much different than any nightmare I've ever had. Too real and too terrifying to put into words. It definitely sounds like your son has psychic abilities that he's developed or was born with. I'm a Sagittarius but a double capricorn...I don't know if that matters in the world of psychism, but I know I've always been sensitive to spirits and energies. You can read my other personal hauntings stories and see how far back my experiences with the otherworld goes. Thanks for sharing!

Wow! Can certainly relate & empathize here Kitty. From what you've described, the possibility that you experienced something from out-side the mind must be taken into consideration. The fact you practice Wicca may be a factor too. I say that in a positive light as concerns your beliefs. The over-powering feel of evil may be key as well. Lets hope your banishing ritual will keep this from happening again. The state between sleep and consciousness leaves a person vulnerable to dis-embodied entities in my experience and research. Its analogous to having a tear torn in ones protective field. Wishing the best on this for you Kitty.

I've had the experience of sleep paralysis and of not being able to completely awaken from a frightening dream for a little while. Still, my experiences pale in comparison to yours. I can't imagine anything more frightening than not being able to move while your child is being harmed. That's the worst nightmare of all. Thankfully, it wasn't real or true, and didn't really happen.

However your cleansing rituals work, they worked FOR YOU, so ignore any skepticism you may receive from well-meaning friends or relatives. What matters is, you can sleep peacefully knowing everyone is safe.

AP - I know for a fact that my cleansing ritual will work. And if I feel as though I need to do it again, I will. I agree with you, but I don't think it has to do with my religion. I think it has to do with the fact that I am a lucid dreamer and am and always have been more open to the spiritual world. Thanks and I'm doing well! :)

Paradise - Yes, it is a frightening experience. I'm glad you've never had them as bad as mine. I wish I could erase the image from my head, but it will always be there. Thanks for the support, as always Paradise.

I think there is a reason why the majority of ghostly experiences happen at night, and the ghost at the bottom of the bed is the most common described. I once had the seemingly real experience of seeing an elderly woman, who I spoke to, as she did to me. She then disappeared before me. It was so real and I believed for some time that I had seen a ghost. However, I now believe it was a hypnopompic experience, and not a supernatural one.

RookerySpooner - That sounds like a very creepy experience, my friend. Thanks for sharing. For me, I don't doubt that there might be a scientific explanation to the things that I've experienced, but I have to lean more towards the spiritual side of things just because they make the most sense to me. Thanks, again!

Kitty, I could just sit here and read this stuff all night, although my hubby may get pissed at me! I must have missed these hubs all the times I have come to your page. Fascinating stuff! I am a true believer in all things paranormal, though I have never experienced stuff with your kind of intensity. The occasional odd whispering in the middle of the night when everyone is asleep; people walking on my floors when I'm the only one home; the dogs barking hysterically at nothing that's visible. Never seen a ghost myself, but have felt presences every now and again; cold corners leaving me feeling nauseous.

There was one incident when I was a young teen...

When I was about 14, me and my 2 best girlfriends used to babysit at a house down the street from where I lived. I remember one day the two girls who lived next door, who were our age--new to the neighborhood--came over to hang out with us. Within minutes they had creeped the 3 of us out so bad, we told them to leave. They had brought their Ouija board with them and started using it; they had an obvious familiarity with it, but they were using it for, what I remember thinking, was communicating with the devil/demons. Talk about your instant nausea!! The vibe of good times and easy friendship that usually surrounded me and my 2 best friends when we hung out together was completely eclipsed by a feeling of dread and ice in the veins. That cured any curiosity I may have had about Ouija boards, let me tell you!!!! And the dead look in the younger neighbor girl's eyes was just the final straw. I remember saying something to her, something like "You are going to be sorry for messing around with that in the future, Little Girl." Almost like something spoke through me--I only think that because I was not what one would have called "outspoken" with people I didn't know back then. That, coupled with the feeling of surprise I felt at having spoken the words (and the odd looks my best friends gave me afterward) have convinced me.

Anyway, thanks for sharing your experiences with us. It takes courage to do so, and I very much appreciate your insights into this subject. Keep them coming! Voted up, useful, interesting and awesome!

laidbacklady - That sounds very much like an experience I had with the ouija board when I was 13! I wrote about that in my first chapter of "personal hauntings". The link is above if you're interested in reading that one. Anyway, I don't mess with ouija boards because of that experience and have come to believe that mostly evil or mischievous spirits will come through the ouija to talk to the player. Thanks for sharing and you did the right thing.

Kitty,

I have had many dreams since I was young that gave me nightmares and sleep paralysis. but what i noticed was ... and this may seem odd but-Whenever I heard this music-right after the music started-I would see the "apparition". It was whitish not transparent but translucent i could almost see through it-

it made no sound- it was whitish had black/greyish sunken eyes but no real neck it was about-5-6 ft tall made no sound- but there was the "music" a soft pipe-organ-windchime mix.... but after a while- I would hear the musicafter a while I could "wake up" ahead of it...

I used to dream that I had woken, and looked about my room, and then tried to get up, but was stuck to the bed. It was quite terrifying. However, I would finally wake for real. Usually, there was something about my room which was different to the dream, i.e. the curtains would be drawn together, rather than back. It is interesting that most ghosts are seen at the bottom of the bed.
