The New Wave: Vampire Addiction

If you are anything like me, you have had an obsession with vampires since the first time you watched a vampire flick. My vampire cherry was popped when I watched The Lost Boys for the first time. I was ten years old and the bloody scene around the bonfire sort of the scared the 'tween bejesus out of me but at the same time I was also extremely fascinated with the concept of vampires...immortal life, the ability to fly, uncanny strength and a sexy pair of fangs...how could I not have obsessed over that?

My obsession turned into a flat-out addiction, once I hit my teen years, and I had watched Bram Stoker's Dracula starring Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder, as well as Interview with the Vampire starring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. The beautiful scenery and the romantic Victorian vibe that both of these movies displayed just sucked me into the world of vampires. I have read books on the origins of belief in vampires, I have even written my own short stories involving vampires...the idea of the vampire is one that I cannot seem to keep my mind away from.

And without further adieu, I present to you my top five favorite vampires to ever have graced the boob tube or the big screen. By the way, if you have not seen one of the following movies or TV shows, you may not want to read any further...I do not want to spoil the flicks for you!

The Lost Boys, The Queen of the Damned, True Blood, and Bram Stoker's Dracula.

5. David

If you are a true vampire movie fan, one of your favorite 80's vampire movies would have to include The Lost Boys, starring Keifer Sutherland as David. The Lost Boys movie demonstrates the wild decade of the 80s, in all its leather-clad and spiked hair glory. I am about ninety-nine percent sure you may even spot a pair of leg warmers and a headband or two in this flick! Nevertheless, the movie is based on a pair of brothers that move to a town in California locally infamous as being the "Murder Capital of the World". The older brother (played by Jason Patric) is sort of a douche about having to be moved to a different town...only to live with his mother, younger semi-gay brother (Corey Haim), and their old hippie grandfather (who is actually hilarious in this film).

The older brother ends up getting involved with the "wrong crowd", seemingly lured in by a sexy vamp chick (played by Jamie Gertz) who wants to make him her first kill. David (Keifer Sutherland) is the leader of this vampire gang and sort of has an ongoing tryst with the older brother...jealousy? Maybe...but I think that Keifer Sutherland should not have to be envious of Jason Patric in this film. David (Keifer's character) is most definitely the star! He sports a Billy Idol-reminiscient, bleached-blonde, spiky mullet 'do with the ever necessary silver earring. David's evil plot in this film is to kill and to turn others that are able to become deadly killers with his gang...hot. Keifer Sutherland's new millenium characters have nothing on this sexy vampire teen.

4. Akasha

Akasha was considered the "Queen of the Vampires" in the movie based off of Anne Rice's popular novel, The Queen of the Damned. Aaliyah, the late and great r&b singer, starred in this romanticized vamp film, as Akasha...and she did more than a fabulously wicked job of doing it!

If you have not seen this movie, I highly recommend that you do. It is available on instant streaming through Netflix at this very moment. I watched it last night with my husband and was literally enchanted by the storyline and the beautiful characters on the screen. Lestat is one of the main characters and he is seduced by Akasha, as her goal is to take over the world and create a new society where she would rule as goddess and women would also reign over men. Akasha only wants Lestat around to be her cohort and love slave. Both of her concepts aren't necessarily bad ones...if you ask me.

Nonetheless, Aaliyah is absolutely breathtaking as Akasha in this film and not only gives off an air of ancient vampire royalty but also displays evil...and the beauty to be found in it.

3. Queen Sophie-Anne

Evan Rachel Wood plays the flawlessly glamorous Queen Sophie-Anne, the Vampires' Queen of Louisiana. Her bright red hair seems to always be styled in a vintage 1940s style - with sexy curls pinned to the sides of her head or adorned with a vintage pillbox hat with a black-netted veil. She exhudes a sexy confidence and power that is hard to not become bewitched by. In nearly every scene involving the beautiful Queen Sophie-Anne, her presence literally commands your attention...even drawing it away from the likes of Bill Compton and Eric Northmann (two extremely hunky male vamps).

I think the reason I cannot seem to get enough of Sophie-Anne is because I am such a sucker for vintage pin-up models such as Bettie Page and Marilyn Monroe. Check out the picture of Queen Sophie-Anne to the right...that one-piece bathing suit and white cat-eye sunglasses are to die for...literally!

2. Dracula

Bram Stoker's Dracula is a beautiful piece of literature that has been made into films quite a few times. My favorite is the most recent Bram Stoker's Dracula, featuring Wynona Ryder and Keanu Reeves as two of the main characters. However, the absolute star of this film is Count Dracula himself. He has unspeakable powers of the mind and his strength grows as he drinks more and more blood throughout the movie...turning the one of the main character's loved ones into one of his own. Dracula also has the uncanny ability to turn into a bat, a pack of rats and even a wolf in this film. These powers and abilities being the main reason why I have chosen him as my number two on my vamp countdown.

This flick is sort of like an ode to traditional vampires...in all their evil blood-sucking and metamorphosis glory.

1. Bill Compton

If you are a trubie, you will understand why I have chosen Bill Compton (played by the gorgeous Stephen Moyer) as my numero uno favorite vampire of all time! Besides his rugged good looks, he is also a southern gentlemen with a heavily protective side. He enjoys long walks through the Bon Temps cemetery with his girlfriend Sookie and also enjoys a good bottle of O Negative Tru Blood...on the rocks.

If you have not yet had the chance to watch HBO's original show, True Blood...now is your chance. I believe they play it on demand constantly, and you can also rent the seasons through Netflix and Blockbuster. Watch it from the very first season and I guarantee you, you'll be addicted! The first time I ever watched True Blood, I was taken aback by the dramatic yet hilarious scenes...but Bill Compton sure caught my eye over the rest of the amazing characters. He is a two hundred and some year old vampire that falls in love with a local waittress, who just happens to have psychic abilities and can read peoples' minds. However, she is unable to read Bill's mind...so she falls for him, as well. The different seasons put twists and turns into their relationship, but I am a dedicated team Bill member ALL THE WAY. I believe he will come out on top...again.

I'm a big fan of all those mentioned. Especially Bill Compton. But hands down, Tom Cruise's Lestat will always be my favorite on screen vampire.

....a very definitive vampire hub and some new slants and angles on this age old (pardon the pun) subject too - and a homework assignment for you - go to You Tube and type in George Romero's Martin, a classic film from the 70's which just may be the quintessential psychology vampire movie .....

Hi, epigramman! So nice to meet you on hubpages! I so greatly appreciate the compliments here. I will definitely have to check out Martin, seems right up my dark alley! ;) Is it similar to Countess Dracula? I love vampire flicks from the 70s.

...just arrived home from night shift to retire to my coffin but just before I do I must give you a homework assignment - please please do yourself a big favour - find a copy of the original THE HAUNTING from 1963 in black and white - it's one of the best ghost movies of all time - believe me I am a major film buff so I should know - lol - and just go to You Tube and type in Robert Wise The Haunting (he's the director who also directed the Sound of Music) and the other one is a real classic which you'll love - the original CARNIVAL OF SOULS in black and white and again you'll find it on You Tube - happy haunting - lol - I meant Happy Hunting - and now to my coffin to sleep the sleep of the (un)dead! 4:35 am Lake Erie, Ontario, Canada
