So what image comes to mind when you think of a Mexican Day of the Dead tattoo? Sugar skulls, of course. What is a sugar skull exactly and why are they so popular for Mexican Day of the Dead tattoos?
In Mexico, the Day of the Dead or Dia De Los Muertos, is a time to celebrate and honor their ancestors and is celebrated on November 1st/2nd in alinement with the Roman Catholics' "All Saints' Day". The origins of the Day of the Dead can be traced back to the time of the Aztecs and corresponds with other ancestral celebrations around the world (including the Celtic's Samhain holiday). The Sugar Skull is one of the main symbols or images seen during the Day of the Dead festivities and represents the past ancestors of Mexico. The reason they are called "sugar skulls" is because the authentic sugar skulls were made out of clay molded sugar. The Mexicans would also add the name of a departed soul to the forehead of the sugar skull and then "placed on the gravestone" of the departed loved one to encourage the return of that soul on the Day of the Dead (according to Wikipedia).
There are other images and well-known symbols representing the Mexican Day of the Dead that would make awesome Day of the Dead tattoos for girls, including humorous calaberas (skeletons), vibrant butterflies and bright flowers.

Another great subject Kitty. These tats are fascinating and a bit eerie at first. It's good you've got some of the history on them as otherwise one could get the wrong impression. They're beautifully done...what a way to tempt the soul back and honor the deceased. Hey Kitty, like the avatar, what team are you pulling for there?
