You Want to Know How to Become a Wiccan?

Have you recently had a revelation in your spiritual path that has led you to the old earth religion Wicca? You are not alone in this time of enlightenment. However excited and clear your mind and heart might feel towards the idea of being Wiccan, maybe you are unsure as to how to become a full-fledged Wiccan...maybe you are confused as to where you should begin in your Wiccan path. In this hub, I will go into the basics and some details as to how to become a Wiccan.

If you want some great tips, subscribe to TipToeChick's Youtube Channel! She rocks...seriously.

The Two Major Rules of Wicca

In hopes that you know what the Wiccan religion truly encompasses or that you at least have an inkling as to what Wicca truly is, we can discuss the two major rules of Wicca that all Wiccans strive to abide by. Because Wicca is a very open and utterly not staunch religion, there aren't many rules or regulations per practitioner; however, these two rules are rules that one must strive to follow if wanting to know how to become a Wiccan.

The first and ubiquitous rule is An Ye Harm None, Do As Ye Will.
What does this rule mean exactly? It's sort of equivalent to the Christian saying "treat others as you would like to be treated", but is even more basic than that. If you plan on doing your first spell and it has implications of confusion or harm upon another person (even yourself), then you need to re-think what you're intentions are with becoming a Wiccan. Wiccans believe that everyone and everything has a purpose and is a part of the Universe and of the gods and goddesses. You wouldn't want to harm the universe or the gods now would you? So don't do harm to others or yourself, as we are all a part of the Universe.

The next rule and one that I have experienced to be innately truth is Whatever you do comes back to you times three.
This rule is one that is supremely representative of Karma, in all its consequential glory. Whatever you do in your personal life, and whatever decisions you make, have a consequence be it good or bad. This is the same idea with practicing Wicca. If you put out a spell to take revenge upon an enemy, that negativity and revengeful energy will come right back at you...but three times as worse as what you put out there. Not good times...let me just say that. I have had personal experience with this rule...I didn't follow it and I was smacked in the face with it...times three. The same thing goes for if you are a loving and kind-hearted person, eventually you will receive that love and kindness back threefold; however, don't run around doing nice things for everyone purely for selfish motive...Karma and the universe just don't work like that (ask TipToe Chick on YouTube).

When learning how to become a Wiccan, one must know these rules by heart and follow them whole-heartedly.

Do Your Research on Wicca

When learning something new, no matter what it is, one must do research on that topic. The same goes for following a new religion such as Wicca. If one wants to know how to become a Wiccan, one must read up and fully engage in his or her resources.

The books I have posted here through Amazon have all been read by me, personally. The very first book I ever picked up on Wicca was Silver Ravenwolf's To Ride A Silver Broomstick. I highly recommend this book for younger people getting started with Wicca. Other wonderful starter Wiccan books include Scott Cunningham's Wicca: A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner and also Earth Power: Techniques of Natural Magic. Scott Cunningham is and has always been one of my favorite and most trusted authors in the Wiccan religion. Unfortunately no more new material will be published by Scott, as he has passed and moved on to the Summerland. But any of his books are easy to understand and beautiful.

Another great book, especially for more advanced readers, is Laurie Cabot's Power of the Witch. This is an older book on witchcraft and Wicca, but it is powerful and eye-opening, nevertheless. Give it a try, you may love it...you may hate it. But at least you can say you've done your research!

Your First Wiccan Ritual

Whether practicing solitary (such as I do) or practicing with a coven, your first ritual is generally somewhat nerve-racking. Why? It is brand new and you are worried how it will turn out...will you say the right things? Cast the circle correctly? Remember to ground & center? Don't sweat it, it will all work out perfectly. Remember that sometimes there is beauty in chaos.

For your first Wiccan ritual, I suggest doing something very simple and quick such as lighting a candle and saying a short prayer before bedtime for protection or love, etc. Maybe you could practice a particular meditation when you wake up, while watching the sun dance its way into the sky. Or maybe you could simply take a cleansing bath and focus on the healing and loving energies of the water surrounding and enveloping your body. Connect with the elements in a simple yet effective way...that is your first ritual.

How to Become a Wiccan Continued...

There is much much more to learn about Wicca and how to become a Wiccan; however, we will save that information for future hubs. We will be going into herbs and their magical uses, divinatory tools, sabbats and corresponding rituals, candle and incense spells, etc.

It is sad that witches were once kill just like those of other religions. It is thought that witches are bad but some people say there are black, and white witches. The rule "hurt ye none but do ye what ye will" how does it apply when an enemy wants to kill a witch either by black magic or physical attack? Is a witch not suppose to be protected from harm ? If they can be protected then how does it apply in that situation? What is the consequences of things going wrong during wicca ritual?

kittythedreamer profile image

kittythedreamer Hub Author 9 months ago

David - You bring up some very good points, my friend. Obviously there's going to be some scenarios in which the "ye harm none" rule isn't fully compatible with the situation. I believe that the rule is simply to mean not doing harm out of malice or revenge. Or not carelessly harming someone for one's own sake. If a Wiccan is being physically attacked then it is self-defense if she protects herself...there's a difference there obviously. As far as black magic or psychic attacks, a Wiccan has ways of shielding herself and binding her enemy against her without actually doing harm to her attacker. Thanks for asking those questions though, absolutely made me think! :)

Oh and to answer your question about the ramifications of a ritual or spell gone wrong, well, they don't typically "go wrong" if you come with an open heart and an open mind but also insure that you've grounded, centered, and protected yourself before doing the ritual. Obviously with prayer and quick candle spells, these are not always necessary steps. But the issue can be that if you are doing a ritual to connect with nature, you are drawing energies and forces to you in a very real spiritual way so you don't want to let any negative energies get pulled along with the positive. Negative energies and spirits are attracted to people who are open to the spiritual world, so we must protect ourselves from letting them in.

Wicca is something that has interested me in the past, but I've been hesitant to find out more. When I was 16, I asked a woman to explain some of it to me, but she made it sound like a Hippie religion. IDEK. I was brought up Baptist and just disagree with so much of it, but finding something else to believe in hasn't been helpful. At this point I guess I'm angry at whatever is out there. One thing I have read and noticed about Wiccans is the intent to do good and be good. That is utterly reassuring like nothing else is, and I wish the best and have the utmost respect for all who follow this. =)

Rules to live by! You explained this so well Kitty-So many people do not understand how simple it really is, I have always believed in karma and who doesn't understand the concept of treating others as you want to be treated...

Wiccan it is! Up useful and awesome!

Kitty, thanks for your comment. I do not think it is right for one to permit harm caused by another to befall one when one can prevent it physcially or spiritual. It is also possible to have shield protection which is a spiritual protection against unseen harms. It is wrong to harm an innocent being so I agree that its harm to harm out of malice or any other reason. What I mean by ritual going wrong is that I think ritual have procedures so what happens is a mistake in procedure occurs?

Meisjunk - Hey, I know exactly what you mean, as I was raised in an even more extreme church than you...Pentecostal! You know, the ones that speak in tongues and go "slain" in the spirit? So, even to this day, I have personal struggles in that I sometimes think, If I am not a Christian, am I going to hell? Or, will god turn me away when I get to Heaven? But as of recently, I've learned and try to reinforce within myself the idea that there are so many different people and cultures around the world, and God knew that that would happen going into the whole humanity thing...so he must've known that making different people would lead to different belief systems, right? I think that as long as you believe in something, a higher power, and try your best to improve upon yourself spiritually, that that's all that matters. Personally, I believe in a God and a Goddess. Or Both as one...if that makes sense. I also believe in Jesus, but not in the same aspect as Christians do. It's taken me years to get to the mindset that I've found today, and don't get me wrong..I still struggle with it, but I'm learning to love myself and my true beliefs more and more each day...and to trust in them. Thanks for reading, if you're interested in learning more, I suggest subscribing to TipToeChick's Youtube Channel and definitely reading the books posted above. :) I'm actually re-reading Scott Cunningham's Wicca book (the first one).

Chatkath - I agree, they are great rules to live by and I don't see how anyone could criticize a religion that lives by these rules. Thanks for your support! :)

david - Very good points indeed. When you're asking about rituals going wrong, I really feel that it depends on what part of the ritual you're talking about. If you're referring to maybe a slip of the tongue and a part of the chant or verse going wrong, I don't think that has an effect at all on the outcome. But if you're talking about forgetting to draw a circle of protection or forgetting to thank the deities, then that might have a negative effect in that a. if you don't draw a circle of protection, other negative things could come through and b. if you don't thank the deities for their aid, your spell or ritual might not have as powerful an effect. Hopefully this helps answer your question a little more.

Excellent information on the Wiccan culture. I've been intrigued, simply because it seems to be the one religion where women are not discriminated against in any way. I'm a Christian; I don't believe that conflicts with the Wiccan beliefs. They are older beliefs, from long before the time when Christ lived. I don't think the two are mutually exclusive, though I could be wrong about that.

kittythedreamer profile image

kittythedreamer Hub Author 9 months ago

Paradise7 - You're right about the non-discrimination with women in Wicca. It's a beautiful thing, really. The point is not to exalt women, but to bring them to the exact same level as men within a religion or belief system. Being a Christian, in my opinion, does not conflict with Wiccan beliefs. Many Wiccans actually incorporate some of the Christian beliefs into their own belief system. I don't believe the two are mutually exclusive, but ask a staunch strict Christian or even a staunch Wiccan and they might tell you otherwise. I am of an open mind and open heart and try to incorporate aspects from many different beliefs into my own. Thanks!

Kitty thanks, you made clear the importance of the protective circle. Were you once a Christian or you only had a Christian background before you became a wicca? I am not against any religion for as long as it does not teach hate and harm against others. I try to tell people to hold unto their chosen path. That is why I question those that use any doctrine or scripture to claim that they are the only way to God. It is interesting to know that you know about Jesus and Christian before you choose wicca.

kittythedreamer profile image

kittythedreamer Hub Author 8 months ago

David - I guess you could say that I was once a Christian, yes. However, I never felt fully connected to it. I never felt like I was home, to put it simply. I had a lot of questions that never got answered and when they were answered, it only drew up more questions in my mind and heart. When I found Wicca, it all seemed to make sense to me, it seemed to answer questions that I had always pondered. I felt like I had come home. Hopefully that makes sense? I too will never condemn anyone for their beliefs, as long as the beliefs are for the good of mankind and spirituality.

@davidkaluge:

If you get to know a lot of Wiccans and other Pagans, you'll find that almost all of them have pretty thorough knowledge about Christianity as well as a vast amount of other religions. Pagans for the most part are very interested in all spirituality, and they tend to find inspiration in every path out there. Most seem to understand the harm in being ignorant towards others since so many know so little about Paganism, so they make an effort be in enlightened about different modes of thinking and believing.

@Kittythedreamer:

I really like your hub and I think it offers a great intro to Wicca. I don't think I'd consider Wicca an "old earth religion" though, since it was formed around the 1940s. It's definitely founded on old earth religious principles and beliefs, though, and I know that's what you were implying too.

kittythedreamer profile image

kittythedreamer Hub Author 8 months ago

eaprette - Thanks for your support. When I say Wicca is an "old earth religion", I say it because it is based on some of the oldest beliefs in history...to prehistoric times. Of course none of our religions are exactly the same as thousands of years ago, not even Christianity is the same. We are constantly changing as a race and religion is bound to change along with us. So even though "Wicca" may not be the exact religion or ways of prehistoric and ancient peoples, it is based on the beliefs and connections with nature, the God and the Goddess. Thanks, again.

Thanks Kitty, and Eaprette for your comments.Kitty, I understand your position about finding a religion that made sense to you. I told a friend just like I said in one of my hubs, it seems there is relatively little, if any power, in most churches now compared to the early apostles that were filled with powers and wonders. The question is what is wrong? Where went the power? The point I am trying to put is that some people may not want to only believe by faith but feel and know that there is divine powers.

I was raised a baptist but am not what they call a christo-pagan. I find it to be the right path for me. You are really skilled when sharing wiccan information. Thank you for this. I hope people become more aware of this religion and stop being so judgmental.

Echegwo - You can be!

Cresentmoon2007 - When I first began my path I considered myself a Christo-Pagan...but now that I'm learning who I am at a deeper level, I am beginning to cross the "Christo" off of the phrase. At this point, I consider myself an eclectic Wiccan. Thanks for reading and sharing!

Do you know any thing about pagan prayers if i pray and I got a tingly feeling afterwards what does that mean? Thank you.

kittythedreamer profile image

kittythedreamer Hub Author 7 months ago

mxme25 - It sounds like you are sort of lost...but yet on the right path. I would suggest doing some research, and maybe reading books written by authors like Scott Cunningham, Laurie Cabot, and even Silver Ravenwolf. They will give you the basics of the Wiccan religion and spiritual path. As for getting tingly feelings after a Pagan prayer, you've probably had a legitimate connection. You're experiencing spirituality. Keep it up.

I know it might sound silly but how do I know if I am a witch?

kittythedreamer profile image

kittythedreamer Hub Author 6 months ago

mxme25 - I think you'll know when you realize that you're seeing everything differently. The world will start to look different...you'll notice things in nature that you never might have before...you'll think differently too. You might even pray more often, or change the way you treat others. You will realize that there is more to life than what people tell you. You'll know. :)

mxme25 6 months ago

It seems to me that I am not connecting to the god/goddess or I am losing connection if I consider heat to be an indicator of connection strength what am I not doing or not doing right (I meditate and pray).

kittythedreamer profile image

kittythedreamer Hub Author 6 months ago

mxme25 - What sort of religious background do you come from? I think that you're set on the belief that something physical is going to happen when connecting with the deities...this isn't always necessarily true. You might not hear, feel, or see anything during prayer or meditation. Sometimes all is silent...but that doesn't mean that you're not connecting. The best advice that I can give you is to just relax and not try so hard or expect a certain result. Don't focus on what you think should happen...just let whatever is going to happen happen. Blessings.

mxme25 6 months ago

OK thanks kitty. I guess that I am the sort of person who believes that things happen physically a bad habit of mine.

This girl at my school saids that she is a witch and her friends are werewolves/wolves. I kind of got on there bad side for not believe them. :/ She has been giving me evil looks and I have after school drama with her and this boy who saids that he is a wolf. Last trem in week two the techer told us to lay down. I was laying down first, before they layed down they look at me so they knew that I was there but she nearly kick me in the face when she layed down so I had to move really quick and i knock and drink bottle over. In week four I told my friend and my friend sent a message to Letica( she is the one who saids she is a witch). The message my friend sent to Letica was, Why did you kick Tia (my last name) in the head. If you hurt her I will put you into hoptal!!! The next day I went to school all scared. First brake Letica and Elliot (boy who thinks he is a wolf) and Elliot girlfriend walked past me. Elliot girlfriend stop and talked to Letica when they seen me (I was by my self and it was only them and me there) Elliot's gf ask Letica are we going to.... Letica said soon. Then they walked off. At 2nd brake I was walking over to my group ,my friend was there then she said Letica and Elliot and all there friends are waiting for you. I had to hide in the labray for the rest of the brake. :( Everytime I see her or Elliot and he's friends I get this really really bad feeling. And they keep stareing at me. Last week of trem one at after school drama we had to take all the stuff down to the hall. I thought that they wasn't coming so i was happy but when me and my friend was taking the stuff down we walked out of the door, The wind was blowing my hair around and the first person to look at me was Elliot then Letica and Elliot's girlfriend. They was stareing into my eyes and when I walk past them I could feel that they was still stareing at me. When we was in the hall, the teacher told us to wait behide this bored thing. I was the closes to side that we have to go out of. I was standing and Elliot came and sat down on my left side and Elliot's girlfriend sat on Elliot left side, Letica stand on my right side and all there friends was near us. Standing there with them next to me I fleet like sitting down because I fleet sick and i had that bad feeling plus Letica was looking at me. Elliot stand up and he was trying to climb the rock wall then he went next to Letica as well. When ever one of them goes near me or walks past it feels like I'm getting push and pulled by them and when they stare I gut goruss bumps and shakes all over my body. :/ All I know is that I get a bad feeling when they go near me. :'(Do you think Letica is a witch?

kittythedreamer profile image

kittythedreamer Hub Author 6 weeks ago

tia - She could very well think she is a witch, but a real witch (which means a "wise woman") would not be playing such games with you. This Elliott who you say is a "wolf", it sounds to me like he is just a follower of Letica's. It also sounds to me that you are dealing with bullies...which you shouldn't have to deal with. I would suggest when you are near them or have to pass by them in school to envision a white light surrounding you. Just close your eyes and visualize a white impenetrable light around you and really believe that the light will protect you...and you will feel better. :) It could very well be that one or both of these teenagers are psychic vampires. There are people that have abilities to suck energy out of others...they could be doing that to you. Look into "psychic vampires" and let me know. :) Good luck sweetie and blessings to you. Don't worry...you're just as strong as they are!
