Haunted Egypt

Egypt is a dry yet beautiful land filled with mystery and marvelous relics from ancient times. Since I was a little girl, ancient Egyptian culture and history has fascinated me to my very core. Anything I could get my hands on concerning the Egyptian pharaohs, the pyramids, the Egyptian religions, and the ancient Egyptian way of life was subject to my analysis and awe.

As I've grown older, my fascination with the paranormal has sprouted to a tremendous height...but my passion for ancient Egyptian history has not died. In fact, just recently it has been rekindled with the thought that the ancient land of Egypt could indeed be haunted. I mean, how could it not be? With thousands of years of history (both peaceful and tumultuous times), the country and land of Egypt could very well be called Haunted Egypt.

The Valley of the Kings is located in the Theban Hills in Luxor, Egypt. Simply put, the Valley of the Kings is a valley in which many royal tombs were placed within the hills for a period of about five hundred years in the New Kingdom era of Egypt. Over sixty tombs have been discovered in the Valley of the Kings and more will most likely be discovered in the future.

There are many creepy tales told about the Valley of the Kings in Haunted Egypt; however, one ghostly tale will really make your hair stand on end. It is said that at midnight, the vision of an Egyptian pharoah riding a chariot will blaze through the Valley of the Kings. Eyewitnesses have seen him in all his ghostly glory, wearing his golden collar and headdress and riding a chariot with black phantom horses at the front. Is this ghost of Haunted Egypt the ghost of an ancient Egyptian pharoah that is possibly buried in the Valley of the Kings? We will probably never know...

Many tourists and archaeologists that visit or work in the Valley of the Kings claim that there is truly a feeling of something out of the ordinary in the air...possibly even paranormal or supernatural. There are legends that say that it is actually the ghosts of the ancient Egyptian royals and noblemen that prompt and lead to the discovered of the tombs in the haunted Valley of the Kings.

One of the most popular finds, and most haunting, is the discovery of King Tut's tomb.

One of the greatest discoveries in the Valley of the Kings was the discovery of King Tut's tomb in the 1920's. Along with this historic discovery came what is referred to as the "pharoah's curse". In just days after the tomb of King Tut was unveiled and archaeologists started studying the tomb's contents, bad things happened.

The archaeologist who helped find the tomb passed away within a few months of opening the tomb, and many said that his bird had actually been killed by a cobra snake only a few days after he found King Tut's tomb. The cobra snake is the symbol of the pharoah...ironic? Another strange event surrounding this pharoah's curse was that at the time of death of the discoverer, all of the lights in the city of Cairo went out. Is King Tut's tomb protected by the pharoahs of old? Is there indeed a curse placed on tombs so that whomever opens the tombs will become ill or die? Are these mummies protected by magic even to this very day?

This is only one of Haunted Egypt's supernatural and mysterious places.

It is well known that the ancient Egyptians believed in an afterlife. Their belief in the afterlife was so strong that they developed mummification and built great monuments and chambers for their royal dead. In spite of the modern popular horror image of the mummy, the dead ancient Egyptians don't come back as wrapped up zombies but most likely return to earth as ghosts.

The ghost of Akhenaten is said to wander the deserts of Egypt and has been seen by dozens of people. Legend has it that because Akhenaten abolished the Egyptian gods when he was pharoah, he angered the old religion's followers (which included priests). When Akhenaten died, the priests cursed him to wander the deserts forever as punishment for banishing the old beliefs.

In a place where there is so much history, it is no wonder that Egypt can really be called Haunted Egypt. Throughout the centuries, pharoahs have ruled and died and have been buried in the hills and pyramids of Haunted Egypt. Do their souls live on in those hills and tombs or is the land of Egypt haunted by the pharoahs' ghosts to this very day?

Many visitors of Haunted Egypt claim that there is an overwhelming feeling of something or someone watching them while in the Valley of the Kings. Maybe if you visit Egypt the mummies' eyes will follow you, as well.
