Crazy & Unique Hot Dog Toppings
Summer is in full effect and the grills are out and a'smokin! What are our options for a cook-out, generally speaking? Juicy hamburgers, chicken legs, and the all American hot dog. Is anyone else tired of the same old boring hot dog toppings - ketchup, mustard, and relish? If you are tired of the blase condiments on your hot dog, try out some of the craziest hot dog toppings ideas yet! Go South American, Texan, or even Chicago style for a creative and unique twist on the classic hot dog.
The Chicago Hot Dog Toppings
The absolute epitome of unique hot dog toppings can be attributed to the one and only notorious Chicago Hot Dog.
With a sour dill pickle spear, hugged by numerous slices of juicy red tomatoes, hot onions, and peppers, the Chicago Hot Dog is one of the tastiest and craziest hot dogs in the world! And as if pickles, onions and tomatoes aren't enough for crazy hot dog toppings, slather a bit of the standard sweet relish and mustard on that hot dog and go to town!
South America's Crazy Hot Dog Toppings
Many people that visit South America claim that the people living there tend to put a twist on the American classics, hot dogs included! One of the craziest hot dog toppings ideas that I've seen in my research on hot dog toppings ideas was a hot dog slathered in tomato, sauerkraut, guacamole, and mayonnaise! This particular type of hot dog creation is known as the "completo" hot dog. Sound disgusting? I bet it isn't! If you're ready to go all out on your next hot dog, try out the South American idea for crazy hot dog toppings.
Other Unique Hot Dog Toppings via America
The "Ditch Dog" featured on Martha Stewart's website includes ingredients such as elbow pasta, heavy cream, butter, and american and parmesan cheese! Basically, it's mac n' cheese plopped on top of a juicy hot dog! Talk about crazy hot dog toppings! It seems absolutely delicious, though. If you'd like to give the ditch dog recipe a shot, click on the link below the "ditch dog" pictured to the right.
Lately, my husband and I have been obsessed with one particular condiment - Sriracha (also known as cock sauce). This is a very hot chili sauce that can be found in the Asian section of almost any grocery store. The bottle is clear with a green top and a rooster pictured on the front. We literally put this sauce on all of our food and hot dogs are no exception! Sriracha on hot dogs is spicy but it really kicks it up a notch. A unique hot dog topping for sure.
Do you love things that are extra sloppy? Why not try out a sloppy joe hot dog, for a change? Simply make your sloppy joe beef with the mix and then rub a good portion of it all over your hot dogs for a simple and unique hot dog topping!
A Texas Dog, according to Bobby Flay, consists of a tasty and tangy barbecue sauce, cole slaw and a dill pickle. An intriguing and delightful Southern twist to the Chicago hot dog. I think during our next cook-out, I'm going to give this unique hot dog topping idea a try!
The Savannah Swiss hot dog is another Southern appeal to a crazy hot dog toppings idea. This particular hot dog topping recipe consists of a spicy mayo-mustard sauce with a hint of onion, layered with alfalfa sprouts and hugged by a french baguette.
If you thought the best thing to come out of New York is the greasy, thin version of NY pizza, think again! Have you ever had a New York hot dog, complete with onion sauce, horseradish, and red pepper relish? Give the Big Apple a chance and try out the NY hot dog recipe here:

prasetio30 - Thanks so much! I'm glad you liked it. I think the chicago hot dog looks particularly yummy! Which is your favorite?
Excellent hub!! Enjoyed the info and the photos!! Well done! I enjoy my slaw dogs. Hot dogs are yummy in my tummy!! Voted Up!!
Sunshine625 - Awww thanks so much and I love your "yummy in my tummy" comment...too cute!
I read this hub yesterday evening. Pretty soon I was in the kitchen with everything but the kitchen sink on my chopping block piling high my polish sausage! It was yum! Thanks for the great read and eventually really great dinner!
Corrrh... I never knew hotdogs could be so tantalising. Thanks for this. :)
Kiss Me Kate - awesome! I'm so glad you got to try out some crazy hot dog toppings for yourself! Maybe the kitchen sink would've been a good option too, you never know! Thanks!
Lady_E - Well...now you know!
I think the New York dog is my favorite. It looks delicious. Yummy..... Thank you very much!
I think I'm obsessed with the chicago dog...and maybe the ditch dog...the completo dog looks delicious too though!
Great hub. I generally eat my hotdog with spicy mustard and swill cheese but I'd be willing to try some of the toppings you mentioned. Which ones have you tried so far?
I usually do sauerkraut and mustard, but sometimes sriracha. I've tried the ditch dog and texan but none of the others...though I want to try every single kind here! Thanks, NotWiredThatWay! You rock.
The Completo looks intriguing...although I'm not convinced that there's enough room for the hot dog. The Mayo...I don't get it, but Guac, Tomato and Sauerkraut might be alright.
I'm a saurkraut, onion and hot pepper man, but I'm thinking that my life has been In-completo thus far. Thanks for the ideas!
Matty Says - The Mayo looks like the best part! (that's what Kitty says) LOL. I love the play on words that you use with the in-completo joke. Thanks for reading and enjoying!
One of my favorite restaurants puts crushed chips, pinapple and thier special "pink sauce" (I really think it is just mayo and ketchup!) on their hotdogs. Sounds weird, but so yummy!!
Danielle - Those toppings do sound weird but I'm sure it's a really good hot dog! How unique. Thanks for sharing!
I can go all day on hot toppings, But to name one "the Dallas" BBQ sauce, Bacon,Cheddar cheese, jalepenos, and a special sauce
Make mine with onions and saurekraut, and onions, and it must be an all beef hot dog. Yum! I once knew a man who put jelly on his hot dogs, which sounds awful to me.
Dolores - Yummy, yours sound wonderful! The jelly on a hot dog though? No thanks. I recently tried the doughnut burger at the fair and found it to be not-so-good. But at least I tried it right? Thanks for stopping by. :)
A crazy hotdog to try is the Monte Cristo dog. You crisp up a hot dog bun with butter and a frying pan. Then you spread jelly of your liking onto the bun and melt Swiss cheese over the hot dog and enjoy. It is a fun hot dog to try and it's actually really good!
Matt - That actually sounds interesting & delicious! Thanks for sharing...we'll have to try that out soon. :)
