Fairies: Inspiring Creativity and Wonderment

Ever since I was a little girl, I have believed in fairies. I used to pretend that I was a fairy, frolicking through the woods and playing with my fairy friends. As I grew older, into my teens, I became obsessed with all things fairy - fairy figurines, fairy spells, and books about fairies.

Fairies exist now to inspire creativity and wonderment in children, but also in teens and young adults. Books about fairies for young adults are easy to come by, but many are not up to par on the levels of imagination and sophistication for the young adult.

Read on to learn of some of the best books about fairies for young adults on the market today. Join me in a world where fairies exist and fill our minds with sugarplums and mystery. You might just find that the fairies have been waiting to pull you into their realm...

The World of Brian Froud

Brian Froud is and has been one of my favorite fairy artists since I've been a teenager. When I first ran across one of his books about fairies for young adults, I was working at a thrift store at the age of eighteen. I was getting ready to graduate high school and had just had my heart broken for the first time...and, lo and behold, one of the donations that we acquired that day contained a book by Brian Froud among the junk surrounding it.

That book by Brian Froud was "Good Faeries Bad Faeries", and I fell in love with it immediately! Not only was I inspired and in awe, it also made me forget about my heartbreak for a few moments. That's what reading is supposed to do for you, and books about fairies? Well, they'll help you to forget those woes for even longer!

Brian Froud has illustrated and helped produce many artsy books about fairies for young adults, including: The Goblins of Labyrinth, Brian Froud's World of Faerie, and How to See Faeries. Don't pass up a chance to learn the beautiful and twisted world of the faeries and buy a book by Brian Froud today. Trust me, you won't regret it.

Froud's faeries always seemed to me a bit, well, off-putting when I was younger. In retrospect, though, I think he's probably going for that effect. Back in the day, faeries weren't the friendly, Disnified creatures most of us think of, as kitty certainly knows. Froud's faeries are just scary enough to remind us of the implied threat that all faeries pose--even the 'friendly' ones can turn on you if you say or do the wrong thing, and you may find yourself being spirited away, "With a faerie, hand in hand/ From a world more full of weeping than [you] can understand."

Cresentmoon - Awesome! Brian Froud is more of an artist...the text is intriguing but the artwork is worth it.

amy - Thanks so much!

Jeff - I always found Froud's faeries mystical and sort of distorted in a beautiful sort of way (if that makes any sense). And you're right, the faeries of ancient times and ancient peoples weren't as pretty and beautiful in every aspect throughout time. Many people think that all faeries are sweet and beautiful and always kind and grant wishes...but those beliefs are just not true or rooted in historical lore. Thanks for writing! Love the quote at the end!

I grew up believing in fairies too (sometimes I still like to think they may be around). There is something about fairies that is beautifully intriguing and mystical. This is a wonderful hub and makes me want to go and read a good fairy book!

Hi, kittythedreamer,

Yes, distorted and beautiful is a great way to describe Froud's faeries. They're definitely not of this world, but something hauntingly Other.

Oh, these are all great recommendations! My favorite would be Fround's "Good Faeries", though. My daughter has it and has enjoyed it so very much and got me to love it, too.

Voted up!

I ran across this and thought you'd be interested, Kitty. Apparently Brian Froud is creating a prequel for the Dark Crystal.
