Absinthe. Also known as the "Green Fairie". An alcoholic beverage that has been consumed since at least the late eighteenth century and has just recently been legalized in the United States, after being prohibited for the past one hundred years. Steeped in magical myth and bohemian lore, absinthe was initially used for medicinal purposes but has since come to be known as the beverage of artists and revolutionary thinkers.

If you are looking for a unique themed party for adults, why not throw an absinthe party and make it a night to remember? In this hub, I'll give you tips on how you can throw a wild la fee verte (green fairy) party and enjoy the absinthe alcoholic beverage in its once unlawful entirety!

Absinthe Party Decorations & Ambience

There are a couple different themes within the absinthe unique party theme, both of which I will go into detail below.

The first absinthe party theme idea I have is a Gothic Victorian absinthe party theme. The best way to set the mood for an absinthe party is to find items that resemble the time period when absinthe first became popular in France amongst the Bohemian artists. The absinthe pictures to the right were all found by simply doing a google image search for absinthe and absinthe posters. You could simply blow these images up and print them out on photo quality paper, right from your own home! Amazon has a couple Victorian inspired absinthe posters for sale, as well. The key to making your Gothic Victorian absinthe party a hit is to set up a bar or if you don't have the money to use a bar in your home or otherwise, set up one part of your countertop as an absinthe bar area. Buy absinthe glasses, absinthe spoons, and of course different types of absinthe to set up in the bar area. Make sure the absinthe bottles look somewhat Victorian. If not, you can make your own Victorian absinthe labels at home, too! Print out some images and paste them to the bottles and Voila! Fancy absinthe bottles!

Another idea for your Gothic Victorian absinthe party's ambiance is to set up green candles all around the party area, maybe even in gothic looking sconces on the walls, as you want the lighting to be low if you are trying to set a Gothic Victorian ambiance. Ask all of the guests to dress in Gothic Victorian style. This is especially fun for adults who don't typically dress in Gothic style, but enjoy dressing up in costume every once in awhile! If your furniture is not the Gothic Victorian type, I suggest finding some cheap yet elegant looking black or dark green fabric and draping the fabric over your furniture. Pour the absinthe shots for your guests, but have them dissolve their own sugar cubes for their drinks...get them involved! Make a toast to art and poetry, maybe even ask your guests to bring along a piece of artwork or poetry that they've done for a Bohemian art competition.

My second idea for a unique party theme in the line of absinthe parties is to go totally GREEN! And I'm not talking about the earth-conscious craze here, I'm talking about decorating and making everything in the house or party area green like absinthe! Send out green invitations to your party guests. Buy some green light bulbs for your lamps, like the one posted here. Buy green paper lanterns by Martha Stewart and hang them up in one area of your house/party area. Green streamers, green paper plates & utensils, and green confetti are all perfect party accents! You could probably even do a search for St. Patty's Day decorations and snag up some green party supplies for cheap (just make sure they don't say Happy St. Patty's Day!) If you're having snacks, think of different green foods and ensure that they are the key items on the menu!

Great history and recipes for the Green Fairy. That drink is strong! One certainly gets their money's worth. The ones legally sold in America now can only have so much a % of wormwood. Wonder if its legal to order the full monty from Europe? Super topic kitty.

Hey, AP! Thanks for this original comment. I had to however edit this hub and make it different from someone else's. Hubpages said that it was a "duplicate" of another...so, oh well. Thanks though!

Presetio30 - Glad you enjoyed it.

If you really want the true absynth you need to get one that contains Wormwood. That is what really gets the party started. Old absynth contained this in ingredient and is supposed to cause hallucination. The absynth on the market does not contain any and is just good at getting people really drunk!

AgesMGMT - Definitely true, but I'm sure it's not easy to get a hold of! I've had absinthe on the market in the US and it does nothing but make you feel super drunk. I love the taste of it though...and I don't plan on hallucinating any time soon so I think I'll stick to the boring old alcohol absinthe. :) Thanks!

You sure do know how to party Kitty. I had no idea that Absinthe was allowed now, I'll sure give it a try. Very interesting hub, thanks!

kd4rvb - Hey, thanks! I love parties, especially themed ones. Yes, absinthe is allowed now, but as AgesMGMT pointed out, the original ingredient wormwood is no longer allowed in high volumes within the legalized absinthe. So it's basically just a strong alcoholic beverage now.

Hi! If you want to know about absinthe, check out the info and reviews at wormwoodsociety.org The absinthe available today has just as much wormwood today as it did in the old days. What is regulated is thujone, which has been proven not to be any kind of hallucinogen. See the FAQ and also the excellent review section
